Matching Colors on New Home Addition with Exsisting?
I recently added 1-½ stories to my present home and would like to stain (or if I have to paint) everything to match. The original home is bluish in color and constructed of full 1 1/2 ruff cut cedar boards and batting, as is the new. The problem is when I did a test stain the blue part stained the color (an oak) on the can while the new stained reddish (almost a mahogany). Do you know a penetrating stain (or natural wood color paint) that will look like wood and have the same color on both portions?
That may be hard to match up as the new wood is unstained and the old wood has been stained for a long time.. If you can take a piece of both woods to a reputable paint dealer like Sherwin-Williams or Mautz, trained staff should be able to help you. In order to have them both match, you may have to have special stains mixed, as this is an unusual problem.
Good luck with your project. Painting rough cedar isn’t any easier than staining it–we’ve done both. The wood soaks it all up like a sponge!
