a baseball diamond has the shape of a square 24.7m on a side. mary starts running from first to second base at
a rate of 2m/s at the same time steve starts running from second to third base at a rate of 1.5m/s. after 10 seconds what is the distance between them
I GOT 19.7m am i correct?
so after 10 seconds mary runs 20m
and steve runs 15m
so mary is 4.7 m from second base
and steve is 9.7m from second base
now if you visualize them frozen in their current positions you can see that they form a triangle with the second base forming a right angle now you want to know the distance between them
this can be seen as hypotenuse of this right triangle
so use pythagorean theorem since you know the lengths of the 2 legs which are the distance each of them are from second base
d= (4.7^2+9.7^2)^0.5
d= 10.77868267 metres=> distance between them
