Understanding the Benefits of Sun Protective Swimwear
Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful radiation is important throughout the year, but especially during the summer months when you probably spend quite a bit of time outside. Overexposure to the sun causes sunburn temporarily, but it can also cause wrinkles, sun spots, and even skin cancer when you start looking at it from a long term perspective. Many people think that wearing a tee-shirt with a swimsuit will provide adequate sun protection, but that tee-shirt has a rating of only 5 on the UPF, or ultraviolet protection factor, scale. Such a low rating is completely inadequate when it comes to keeping your skin safe.
The best way to keep your skin safe is to wear sun protective swimwear whenever you are enjoying the water. Sun protective swimwear is often made of Lycra because of how tightly woven the fabric is. It is this fabric density that offers you great protection from the sun. Sun protective swimwear can go all the way up on the UPF scale to 50+, which is the best protection you can get. It’s important to realize that sunscreen may only last an hour or less in the sun, and often it comes right off in the water. Sun protective swimwear that covers as much skin as possible is always your best option. Just remember to continue using sunscreen on any parts of skin that are not protected by the special fabric.
There are many different options when it comes to sun protective swimwear. One choice that is becoming very popular these days is the rash guard, which is essentially a swim shirt with UV protection factor that is high enough to keep your skin protected from the sun. A rash guard can have either long or short sleeves. You also may wish to look into board shorts and surf suits, which cover an even larger area of skin while offering a very high UPF rating.
Sun protective swimwear is an important part of the wardrobe for both children and adults. Children, especially babies, have extremely delicate skin because it is not as thick as an adult’s skin. Adults should also be sure to protect their skin because it has already gone through many years of sun damage. Your skin is a valuable asset, and it is up to you to take care of it and prevent problems that can be caused by getting too much sun.
