Appearing to Terms with Autism and Seeking Help

Autism is probably one of the most commonly misunderstood disorders because of its quality and maybe even because of how it’s portrayed by the entertainment industry. Subscribing to such stereotypes is not supportive of the development of autistic children. The following are a few examples of what autism is not:

• It’s not true that autistic individuals are all highly intelligent especially in skills that require judgement, like decoding puzzles and codes. This myth is based on the fact that an underground of autistic people does expand a high level of expertise on some skills, probably because of their compulsive performance towards things that catch their attention. There are times when some autistic children develop an aptitude for solving codes and puzzles, but these are atypical incidence and not something that can be considered a rule or a broad truth.
• Fallacy #2 – Autism disables a person so much in life that he or she has no hope to live independently and without support. Depending on the kind of support autistic people get from the people around them, mainly from their family, they can actually be capable of being highly functional individuals. Nothing can be farther from the truth as autistic children do have a great possibility of being able to function normally if given the proper humanistic therapy and support that they need especially at an early age. • False impression #3 – Autistic people are not capable of emotions and as a result cannot love other people. This probably came from one of the initial sign of autism in infants which is the lack of ability to focus or maintain eye contact. This doesn’t mean however that autistic children cannot build up feelings. It’s a fact that autistic individuals can in fact form relationships even if with smaller groups of individuals; they are able to form acquaintance, get married, and maintain joyful relationships.
• Autistic children show different symptoms, as opposite to the misconception that all autistic children perform very similar way. Autism has other symptoms as well as the most common denominator that autistic individuals share which is the inability to communicate communally. It appears that the only widely-shared symptom of autism is the difficulty autistic individuals experience in relating with other people; other symptoms are diversed.
• Autism is a disorder that is characterized mainly by a person’s inability to focus well beyond him or herself and thus, finds it very hard to interact to society the way a normal person can. This inability for social communication can be ease in some way by play therapy where an autistic child is persuaded to play with toys that are odds-ion to bring them out of their self-absorption. Play therapy is an interesting kind of therapy where a child is encouraged to play with toys, and the toys are meant to illicit some form of interaction from the child. Autistic children will, for example, find it hard to pretend that a doll is an imaginary baby. Nonetheless, learning to interact with toys is a first step in learning to interact with people.

For play activity to be more effective, parent participation is also essential; therapy does not end within the walls of the therapist’s clinic but preferably also encompasses the home.
