Adult Milestone
My mother-in-law is turning 80.?
My husband and I would like to do something special for his mother, but his siblings (2 sisters & 1 brother) all well off financially, don’t want to do anything. We know that she would like to have a room full of friends & family with her to celebrate & thats what we would like to give her. We offered to pay for the event, if they would help with the planning – they refused & didn’t think that they should do something for her just because she would like it. They also said that if we went ahead and did something like this ourselves, they would be offended and not come. I don’t know, this isn’t about them, shouldn’t they think about their mother and her milestone. She had gone out of her way, solely, to make special events happen for her kids. We are talking about adult kids ages 45 (my husband) , to 55. What is the best thing to do without offending these selfish siblings.
Who should you be more concerned with, your sweet mother in law or the silly, selfish siblings? If you would like to throw her a birthday party, then why not just do it? You can invite all the siblings (you do not want to be the rude ones) and plan it yourselves. Something in the afternoon for a few hours would be nice and accommodating for the elderly people invited. Afternoon appetizers and cake with some nice band music/dance floor and beverages would not be too outrageously priced and maybe just right for the occasion. It is nice of you to think of her and let her have some joy in her age.
